Saprya

by Saprya
Name: Saprya

Race: Half-Elf, Half-Tallman

Age: 52 years

Appearance: Standing at 160cm Saprya excels at making herself seem smaller, soft and unthreatening in the way she holds herself. Her finely cut face and curious hazel eyes are surrounded by a mess of dark brown hair that falls in tangled strands onto her shoulders and down her back, hiding the obvious shapes of her half-elven ears. As she moves, the appearance of her hair seems off in some places though, the greenish tint and strange texture looking almost as if there is moss or lichen growing along some of the curls. There is a single flower with deep purple, fleshy petals tucked behind her ear.
She dresses appropriate for travel, modest with a few playful and feminine touches. Light blouses with selfmade lace and frills she mends on quiet evenings, long, flowing skirts and worn travel boots. For more dangerous undertakings, like a dungeon dive, she will don light leather armour for an additional layer of protection.
Around her neck she wears a choker, irregularly woven out of some unidentifiable material, and all the way around her throat the skin underneath the choker is heavily scarred. Tendrils of pink and red skin creeping out from underneath it as if they have grown there. As if they are alive.

Personality: At first glance Saprya is a sweet and bubbly person who is kind, considerate and quick to make friends. She is always happy to chat at the tavern or market, always happy to hear about local stories and rumours as well as the personal plight of whoever she talks to. She is even quick to offer a helping hand. However when it comes to opening up about herself she has grown wary after too many bad experiences on the road, always careful to stay unobtrusive and nonthreatening, quick to downplay her own abilities and skills as to not be perceived as a threat. She is slow to trust but once she does she is just as hard to get rid of again, unwaveringly loyal to those she cares about. As a devout acolyte of a deity of change Saprya is always deliberate in fostering steady development within herself and those she meets, following the moral code of her god to herald positive transformation wherever she goes. She is especally skilled in the halting, delaying or acceleration of death as one of the incidents with vast potential for change, a transformation of state and being exceptionally revered by her. Though as her god's envoy she often gives herself permisson to interpret their teachings in her favour. For example by choosing to prolong the ultimate transformation death brings by healing her allies ... or inducing that very transformation herself by self-righteously disciplining those who wronged her.

Skills: As Saprya sees herself as a sentinel of death and transformation she is just as practised with healing as she is with more destructive magic and the occasional illusion spell. Aside from her magical abilities her senses are keen for a half-elf, she has exceptional intuition, especially when it comes to the guidance of her deity, and can be quite charming in the right situations.

Background: Saprya grew up in a small and remote village without a name in the southern part of the central continent. Her surprisingly diverse and tightly knit community worships a local deity they call, among other things, the sculptor. Theirs is the domain of change and transformation, of adjustment and adaption that is needed to survive and even thrive through hardship. As such their sanctum, a forest close to the village, is ever changing, paths and plants and wildlife always shifting and changing and mutating through divine influence. Or so the villagers thought. Until Saprya, during her initation rites as a freshly matured member of the community, came upon a part of the forest that was locked in eternal stagnancy: Originating from a mysterious large crystal the surrounding area of the forest had begun to solidify, plants frozen in their current state under an ever growing layer of crystals. Breaking off a crystallized leaf Saprya made her way back to the village where it was quickly decided their god had shown her this part of the forest for a reason. Saprya was to leave the village to find a cure for the sickness of stasis that had befallen their beloved sculptor's sanctum.
After travelling alone for a while Saprya learned the hard way how people don't react kindly to some of the magic she can cast in the name of her god. Still she found company, a half orc and a gnome she travelled with for years, forming close bonds through adventure and battle, diving deep into dungeons to uncover their hidden secrets. Until the half orc, a noble and kind warrior, was struck down in battle. Acting on pure grief and guided by instinct Saprya channelled the powers of her deity to bring her back, only for her half orc companion to lash out and attack her once she understood what had happened. Confused and fighting back through tears Saprya barely managed to escape her execution by the hands of a once trusted and beloved friend. She does not know what became of the half orc. But sometimes she prays that if they ever meet again her god will not compel her to vengeance.
From there on out Saprya travelled alone, following any lead she could find on the mysterious crystal and how to cure its sickness. The latest rumour led her to the Golden Country and a small island about ten miles from its shorelines. There is said to be something, maybe even someone, deep in the dungeon who could give her answers. Saprya is willing to take any chance to heal her god's sanctuary - and finally return home.

Typical Role in Dungeon Parties: Mage (offensive, illusion and healing magic)

Five Key Words About Saprya:
Devotion: Having grown up under the embrace and protection of the sculptor Saprya's love for them runs deep. Their worship is engrained into every part of her culture and her life, down to every single cell of her body that received their blessing, and she is taking them with her every step of her journey. A deep respect and belief in perpetual change and transformation throughout life and death guides her decisions and her actions. Though through the sculptor's blessing Saprya often understands herself as an arbiter of when the time for change has come. Not infrequently she intervenes accordingly. Keeping companions alive so they may still serve their purpose while readying others for the kind of change only death may bring.

Golden Child: When Saprya was born the village elders interpreted the signs of the evershifting sanctum and saw a bright future and divine purpose for her. She grew up revered and beloved, being told by everyone how adored by her god she was, chosen and destined for greatness by them. An upbringing like that would get to anyone's head and even though Saprya was also taught to still be kind and accommodating she tends to react with a self-righteous idignation if anyone dares to get in her way.

Kinship: Hailing from a small, remote village with a strong sense of community almost nothing is as important to Saprya as the safety and happiness of those she calls her kin. She is not as quick to open up and trust new people as she had been at the beginning of her journey. But those she grows attached to and begins to see as part of her community can still count on her to do anything in her power to support them, keep them safe and help them achieve their goals.

Bird Companion: The road can get lonely when your only travel companion is the soothing but silent presence of your deity. Luckily Saprya is not quite as lonely as it seems. During her travels she saved a little bird, extending its life through the power of her god. Receiving the sculptor's blessing changed the bird, as all things change with time, turning it from a small, yellow songbird into a larger creature with rusty red feathers and fur, leathery wings, an outstretched neck and small, skittering, chitinous legs down its chest and belly. In Saprya's opinion it is a creature of pure, divine beauty that reminds her of home, of the friends and family she left behind to save. It is never far from her though she seldom calls it forth when in company and only intoduces it to her most trusted companions, lest any harm befall the small miracle she created.

There are some religious characters in canon, I'm sure in remote areas different religions would develop as well!
