by Cobalt
Name:
Cobalt

Race:
Gnome

Age:
41

Appearance:
Cobalt is a gnome of average height and average build, with a pale, waxy complexion that is the product of too much time spent indoors. They have bushy brows and short, choppy dark hair they often forget to brush. It typically reaches just below their ears, but they keep cutting off parts of it to use in rituals.
They have heavy-lidded dark eyes, with perpetual eyebags that always make them seem tired, almost as if they’ve been up all night, working on a new spell or studying. (They probably were.)
Cobalt doesn’t particularly care about fashion; after they left their home they bought some cheap and durable clothes and threw the clothes they came with away. Due to being a healer, they still have to wear gnome-typical outfits when inside the dungeon, but outside of it they don’t wear their robes. Their clothing, specifically the robes they use for dungeon delving, are all just a bit disheveled.
They always carry a bag stuffed full of things they find both outside and inside of the dungeon. From an outsider's perspective, most of it appears to be worthless.

Personality:
Cobalt has a tendency to lie about themselves. This doesn’t actually come from a sense of superiority, but from deep seated insecurity. Due to their upbringing, they feel like they’re supposed to be something special, and since they aren’t, people won’t respect them if they find out the truth. Cobalt is convinced that they are missing a piece, and can’t let others discover this at all costs.
Around other gnomes, Cobalt’s lies grow more convoluted, as they get more insecure, always worrying that their inherent deficiency will somehow be felt.
Cobalt is very socially awkward and doesn’t seem to notice that their bragging is pushing people more away than just being honest would. Some of their lies are more easily disproved than others and they have a habit of switching up their stories, but sometimes they will say something that sounds just plausible enough to make someone wonder.
They are mostly uninterested in romantic and sexual relationships, but have a weakness for strong dwarf ladies, though this generally doesn’t go beyond admiring them from afar.
Cobalt grew up very sheltered and thus lacks a lot of what most people would call common sense. They knew that you have to pay for shelter because they read about it in a book, for example, but were still surprised the first time an innkeep asked them for payment. They have learned a lot in the year since leaving home, but they still struggle to adjust in many ways.
They are very gullible and easy to manipulate and struggle with understanding social cues, though that won’t stop them from drawing attention to themselves with their outlandish tales. People generally start keeping their distance once they realize that Cobalt is not just making jokes.
They like monsters and think that killing or hurting them should be avoided if possible. After all, it's the monsters who were there first. Cobalt is generally pretty pacifistic and tries to avoid conflict, which doesn't exactly mesh well with their tendency to rub people the wrong way. They think the devourer king was in the wrong for eating all those monsters when he could have befriended them instead.
Mostly seen as an eccentric, but harmless weirdo. Due to this they don’t really have any friends on the island, though they seem to get along well with the stray dogs and cats, and always have a rat named Seymour by their side. They claim Seymour is not a pet, but instead a friend and ally.
Cobalt lives sparsely and isn’t interested in wealth or fame. Instead, they see dungeon delving as an opportunity to learn more about magic. In a way, they spent most of their life learning about the theoretical aspects and now they’re doing field research. They find value in the parts of the dungeon that most people see as a nuisance, and it’s not uncommon to find them crouched down, watching a coin bug skitter around, or stuffing some flowers into their pockets.
They want to learn from everything, convinced that maybe, they could find some part of the answers they’re searching for in something as small as a broken twig.

Skills:
They are a healer of middling ability and don’t have a lot of practical experience yet. They're mostly focused on healing wounds and revival. If the cause of death is something that has been well documented, for example lacerations or a well known poison, and they have read about it, they are more effective at healing it.
They have very little inherent magical ability, which always hinders them. All of their knowledge comes from study, so if they are faced with a situation they haven’t read up on, they won’t know what to do and can only blindly guess. That’s why they obsessively read and research in the never ending quest to fill the gaps in their knowledge.
Thanks to their studies they do know a fair bit about the healing properties of plants, but whether that can be trusted or is just another lie is a risk few are willing to take.
Cobalt has a small knife for self-defense, though they mostly use it to cut plants or bread. They are a pacifist and have hurt or attacked neither human nor monster before, and hope they will never be forced to.

Background:
If prompted about their past, Cobalt will give a variety of different answers, depending on their mood that day. Some stories, though still mostly lies, will have a grain of the truth in them.
Cobalt comes from relatively powerful gnome ancestry. Their lineage is known—though only in gnome circles, and even then only by some—for strong inherent magical potency, but for unknown reason that gene skipped them by. Due to this, they spent most of their youth kept at home and isolated from society by a family who saw them as an embarrassment to their name.
Cobalt spent this time focusing on magical studies and managed to make up a lot of what they lack in natural talent through sheer hard work, though they're always haunted by the fact that they could have the potential to be so much better, if only they manage to somehow unlock the abilities they should have been given at birth. They have middling skill they’ve had to fight hard for, and yet their abilities pale in comparison to their siblings who have never bothered to study at all.
After reaching the age of maturity, Cobalt left home behind, though they’re fairly sure they won’t be missed. The only things they took with them were the clothes on their body, a few of their favorite magical guides, and a rat named Seymour the third, also just called Seymour, the newest member of the lineage of rats that have kept them company over the years. (The rats were not all named Seymour but this is the third of them. Cobalt ran out of names.)
Because their family has never really accepted them anyways and they are ashamed of their lack of magical prowess in comparison to what is expected of them, they discarded their given name and started going by Cobalt, convinced they must hide their true name at all costs. They took up some small jobs in minor dungeons on their way to the Island, though their skills haven’t really been tested yet.
Now, finally at their destination, stocked up on cheese for Seymour and lies to cover up the shameful truth with, Cobalt is ready to search the dungeon for answers about the workings of magic, trying to unlock the hereditary power they are convinced has to still be in their blood, or otherwise, find an explanation for why their family's gift skipped them that isn't just them not being worthy of it.

Typical Role in Dungeon Parties:
Healer

Five Key Words About Cobalt:
  • Books
Basically everything Cobalt knows comes from books. Most of them were left behind when they left their home, but they have already started building a new collection. Books are basically the only thing they spend money on, even foregoing food if necessary.
Cobalt always carries one particular tome around for both spell casting and comfort. The pages are almost falling out. It seems to be well loved.
Because they grew up very sheltered and isolated, most of what they know about socializing, they have learned from books, too. Unfortunately, not all of those books were very well written.
  • Seymour
Seymour the third is Cobalt’s trusted ally and companion. He's their closest friend and currently also their only one. Descendant of a noble line of beloved mice, third of his name, with an affinity for cheese and being scratched behind the ears. Please be nice to Seymour.
  • Treasure
One man’s trash is another man’s treasure, the adage goes, and it’s one Cobalt believes in wholeheartedly. They try to find value in the things that others discard and ignore, collecting trinkets wherever they go. Their pockets are always full of things that no other person would look twice at, and the occasional actually valuable thing they found in the dungeon, tucked away with the same care as a particularly shiny chestnut.
They have an affinity for things that are touched by magic in some way, specifically those sourced from the dungeon, but not everything in their collection is magical. Even if there’s no trace of magic in them, those small, abandoned things are still worth treasuring, Cobalt likes to think.
Surely, this says nothing at all about their psyche.
  • Lies
Although Cobalt lies often, their lies are never malicious. While they embellish their abilities, in order not to endanger people they are mostly honest about what they bring to a dungeon delving expedition.
"I’m incredibly powerful," Cobalt says, "but a curse is currently locking away most of my magical ability. Sorry."
"I have a demon as a friend,“ Cobalt says, "but he’s an asshole and we can’t rely on him for help. Sorry."
"Yeah, I’ve ridden a kelpie before," Cobalt says, "but that was a special kelpie that was my friend and you shouldn’t try it yourself. Sorry."
  • Naive
Due to their sheltered upbringing, Cobalt is rather gullible and naive. They genuinely believe that most people only have the best for everybody in mind, and can be easily manipulated by others. Cobalt hates killing monsters and believe that one day, they’ll be able to befriend them. This definitely isn’t just because of a book series they read when they were young. You can definitely pet monsters as long as you’re respectful about it. After all, if Seymour is their friend, there is no reason why a Warg couldn’t be.

I've known Seymour for less than 10 minutes but if anything happened to that rat I'd never recover

Approved!
